Paula Furey is an Associate Professor in the Biology program at St. Catherine University. Her expertise spans phycology, invertebrate biology, taxonomy, biodiversity, and conservation biology, with a focus on aquatic ecosystems including lakes, rivers, streams, and wet walls.
Her research centers on the ecology of benthic communities and algal assemblages in freshwater systems. She investigates how environmental factors such as flow intermittency, climate change, and nutrient pollution shape these communities, with particular emphasis on diatoms and nitrogen-fixing organisms. Her work aims to improve monitoring, protection, and prediction of changes in aquatic ecosystems.
Analysis of her recent publications (2021-2025) reveals a strong focus on the impacts of climate change and flow alteration on periphyton and algal assemblages in rivers, especially in Texas and Iceland. She has made significant contributions to diatom taxonomy and the understanding of nitrogen fixation in aquatic environments. Her research often integrates field studies with taxonomic expertise.
Dr. Furey has secured research funding, including an NSF MRI grant in 2018 for the acquisition of a fluorescence microscope to support research and training of women at St. Catherine University.
