Paul Yoon is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Focused Inquiry at Virginia Commonwealth University's University College. He received his Ph.D. in ethnomusicology from Columbia University in 2005 and has previously taught at Bowling Green State University and the University of Richmond.
Dr. Yoon's research spans ethnomusicology, popular music studies, critical race theory, gender studies, and acoustemology. He has established three Japanese taiko drumming ensembles, with Sora Taiko beginning at VCU in fall 2014. Notably, he collaborates with VCU's Parkinson's Disease and Movement Disorder Center, teaching taiko to patients while researching how large-scale gross motor motion from drumming affects balance, dexterity, and well-being.
His work represents an innovative intersection of musical performance, cultural studies, and therapeutic application, demonstrating how traditional music forms can address contemporary health challenges while advancing scholarly understanding of sound cultures.
