Paul Winwood

Dr. Paul Winwood serves as Associate Vice President of the Division of Medical Sciences at UNBC and Regional Associate Dean for the Northern BC region of the UBC Faculty of Medicine. He is an Associate Professor in the Northern Medical Program. His career spans academic leadership, clinical practice in gastroenterology, and research in liver disease. He holds advanced medical qualifications including FRCPC and multiple FRCP fellowships.

Research Focus: Dr. Winwood's work emphasizes medical education innovation, rural healthcare delivery, and mechanisms of hepatic fibrosis. He pioneered studies on Kupffer cell roles in liver cirrhosis and recently explored versican's impact on fibrosis. His bone research investigates zoledronate effects on versican in osteoporosis models.

• Medical Research Council Travelling Fellowship (1994–95)

Leadership: Directed the Royal Bournemouth Hospital's gastroenterology department (1996–2008) and has led UNBC's Northern Medical Program since 2012. Advocates strongly for rural medical training and clinical education systems.

Labs/Teams: Collaborates with UCSF Liver Center Laboratory and maintains active research partnerships in liver fibrosis and bone biology.
