Paul Wenzel Geissler is a Professor at the Department of Social Anthropology, University of Oslo. His research bridges anthropology, history, and science studies, focusing on science, medicine, and their material legacies in post-colonial contexts. He holds a PhD in Social Anthropology from Cambridge (2003), alongside degrees in history (MSc, Hamburg, 1993) and biology (PhD, Copenhagen, 1998).
His work explores themes like temporality, memory, and material traces of modernity in Africa and the Arctic. Notable projects include studies of medical research stations in East Africa and Svalbard’s Arctic research dynamics. Awards include the RAI Amaury Talbot Prize (2010) and RAI Film Student Prize (2003).
Geissler collaborates with institutions in Kenya, Tanzania, and Europe. His recent projects, such as Epidemic Traces and AnthroTox, address global health ethics, environmental toxicity, and the interplay between science and colonial legacies. His research emphasizes the social life of scientific infrastructure and the enduring impact of modernist projects.
