Dr Paul Uhlmann is an Associate Professor in the School of Arts and Humanities at Edith Cowan University (ECU). He holds a Bachelor of Arts from the Canberra School of Art, a Master of Arts from The Australian National University, and a PhD from RMIT University (2012).
His research focuses on interdisciplinary art practices, including printmaking, installation art, and artists' books. Key areas of exploration include the intersection of art with philosophy (particularly Spinoza), impermanence, and historical narratives such as the Batavia shipwreck and maritime migration. Uhlmann has led major projects like the Batavia Wreck Project (2016–2017) and Mobilising Dutch East India Company collections (2023–2026), funded by organizations like the Australian Research Council.
His creative works span solo exhibitions (e.g., Land of Smoke, 2020) and collaborative projects, often addressing themes of memory, environmental concerns, and historical reenactment. Notable outputs include Useless Tune (2023, children's picture book) and Continent of Smoke (2022, installation series).
Uhlmann has supervised numerous postgraduate students in visual arts and interdisciplinary practices, with completed theses exploring topics like Buddhist temporality, photographic identity, and printmaking digitalization. His work has been exhibited globally, including in Australia, China, Spain, and Turkey.
