Dr Paul Thornton is an Associate Professor at the University of Leeds, affiliated with the School of Design within the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Cultures. He serves as Deputy Director of the Leeds Institute of Textiles and Colour (LITAC) and Deputy Director of Research and Innovation. His research focuses on sustainable polymer synthesis, particularly biodegradable and bio-renewable materials for applications in healthcare, personal care, and environmental solutions. He collaborates extensively with industry on projects like dye transfer inhibitors and sustainable corrosion inhibitors.
Thornton holds a PhD and is a member of the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) and the Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA). His work emphasizes environmentally positive polymer development, including poly(amino acids), poly(hydroxy acids), and modified biopolymers. Recent projects involve drug delivery systems, antimicrobial materials, and bio-mineralization hydrogels.
His research outputs span over two decades, with a focus on responsive materials, enzyme-mediated systems, and sustainable polymer design. While no awards are explicitly listed, his contributions reflect significant innovation in biomaterials and green chemistry.
