Paul Thompson is a Professor & W.K. Kellogg Chair in Agricultural, Food, and Community Ethics at Michigan State University (MSU), holding primary affiliation in the Department of Agricultural, Food, and Resource Economics with partial appointments in Philosophy and Community Sustainability. He joined MSU in 2003 after serving as Distinguished Professor of Philosophy and Director of the Center for Food Animal Productivity and Well-Being at Purdue University, and prior to that as Professor of Philosophy and Agricultural Economics at Texas A&M University.
Thompson earned his Ph.D., M.A., and B.A. from SUNY Stony Brook and Emory University, respectively. His research focuses on ethical and philosophical dimensions of agricultural technoscience, including biotechnology, nanotechnology, and biofuels. Key themes include the moral implications of recombinant DNA techniques, nanotechnology in food systems, and agrarian ethics rooted in American pragmatism. He has directed research centers addressing science policy, animal welfare, and environmental ethics.
His scholarly work spans interdisciplinary topics such as food safety, animal biotechnology ethics, and sustainability. Thompson’s presentations, including lectures like 'What Is Good Food? An Argument with My Wife,' emphasize integrating philosophical inquiry with real-world agricultural challenges. He contributes to public discourse through his blog at Thornapple CSA and has authored influential books like The Ethics of Intensification and Encyclopedia of Environmental Ethics and Philosophy.
