Paul Telfer serves as Clinical Professor of Haemoglobin Disorders and Haematology at the Blizard Institute, Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, Queen Mary University of London. He holds dual clinical leadership roles as clinical lead for haemoglobinopathy services at Bart's Health NHS Trust and coordinator for regional Haemoglobinopathy Centres covering East London, Essex, and Southeast England. Nationally, he contributes to healthcare policy through the Clinical Advisory Group for National Specialist Commissioning in Haemoglobinopathies and the Steering Group of National Screening Programmes.
His educational credentials include DM, MA, BM, BCh degrees alongside prestigious fellowships from the Royal College of Physicians (FRCP) and Royal College of Pathologists (FRCPath). Research interests span longitudinal cohort studies of sickle cell disease (SCD) and thalassaemia, development of novel therapies including gene-based approaches, optimization of acute pain management protocols, and international epidemiological work in Bangladesh. He actively collaborates with pharmaceutical partners on clinical trials and patient advocacy groups like elev-en.health for symptom monitoring innovation.
Recent publications (2019-2021) reveal three critical research trajectories: evaluation of emerging therapeutics (notably voxelotor in the HOPE trial), genetic determinants of thalassaemia outcomes, and patient-centered pain management solutions including non-injected opioid protocols. This work bridges laboratory investigations at Queen Mary with real-world clinical applications across NHS networks.
No scientific awards were documented in source materials.
As chief investigator for the SCAPE trial (Sickle Cell Analgesia Protocol Evaluation) and East London Newborn Sickle Cell Cohort Study, alongside principal investigator roles in multiple commercial therapeutic studies, Professor Telfer directs substantial research funding streams. His patient-centered approach extends to co-authoring national management guidelines and the Springer-published reference 'Sickle Cell Disease in Clinical Practice'.
He operates within the Blizard Institute's research ecosystem, collaborating with the Centre for Cell Biology and Cutaneous Research and international partners in Bangladesh. Current initiatives focus on continuous symptom monitoring technologies through patient organization partnerships and expanding newborn screening impact across Southeast England.
