Paul Staniland is a Professor of Political Science at the University of Chicago, serving as associate department chair. He is a nonresident scholar in the South Asia Program at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace and co-editor of the Cornell Studies in Security Affairs book series. His research focuses on political violence, international security, and South/Southeast Asia. He holds a PhD from MIT (2010). His notable works include Networks of Rebellion (2014) and Ordering Violence (2021).
Staniland's research emphasizes armed group-state dynamics, insurgency cohesion, and geopolitical rivalries. He received the 2022 Karl Deutsch Award for contributions to International Relations. Current work explores third-party states in post-1945 southern Asian power rivalries. He also engages in comparative analyses of conflict strategies, public opinion on foreign policy, and military institutions in South Asia.
