Professor Paul Sowden is Research and REF Lead in the Department of Psychology at the University of Winchester and Visiting Professor at the University of Surrey. His research examines cognitive mechanisms of creative thinking, perceptual learning, and educational applications of creativity research.
Research focuses on enhancing creative thinking through education, cognitive training interventions, and understanding environmental influences on creativity. Current projects include the Arts Council England-funded Creativity Collaborative initiative and OECD collaboration on fostering creative/critical thinking.
He leads the Creativity and Cognition Research Group and mentors numerous PhD students investigating creativity across domains including foreign language learning, remote work teams, digital environments, attention/perception relationships, historical education, and depression/anxiety cognition.
