Associate Professor Paul Smith is a composer and researcher specializing in opera and toy piano music at the University of New England (UNE), affiliated with the School of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences. He holds a Doctorate of Creative Arts from Western Sydney University and co-leads Blush Opera. His work bridges music with visual arts, theatre, and interdisciplinary collaboration, emphasizing satire and new narratives in opera. Notable projects include Chop Chef (2021), Cobblestones (2018), and collaborations with Antonietta Loffredo and Todd Fuller.
Education: Doctorate of Creative Arts (Western Sydney University), BMus(Hons).
Research focuses on opera’s intersection with other art forms, music pedagogy, and the politics of voice. Key creative works include chamber operas, toy piano compositions, and scores for animation and theatre. He has received grants including CreateNSW’s Individual Project Grant for Papered (2023).
