Dr. Paul Simpson is an Associate Professor of Paramedicine at Western Sydney University with 26 years of experience in the field. Previously serving as the inaugural Director of Paramedicine at Western Sydney University from 2013 to 2022, he now contributes to institutional governance as Deputy Chair of the University's Human Research Ethics Committee. He is also the founder and former Chair (2018-2022) of the Australasian Council of Paramedicine Deans.
Dr. Simpson maintains an active clinical practice as an intensive care paramedic in NSW Ambulance while leading significant academic initiatives. As Editor-in-Chief of Paramedicine, an international peer-reviewed journal, he shapes scholarly discourse in the field. His regulatory roles include serving as a Practitioner Member of the Paramedicine Council of NSW and previously chairing the National Competency Assessment Consortium (2022-2025). Professionally, he serves as a Director on the Board of the Australasian College of Paramedicine.
His research spans paramedicine education, clinical decision-making, pain management, palliative care in paramedicine, and paramedic workforce development. Dr. Simpson's recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on developing evidence-based frameworks for specialized care areas and advancing research capacity in Australasian paramedicine. His work on work-integrated learning and academic workforce issues addresses critical challenges in paramedic education.
Dr. Simpson has received the Solphus Falck Prehospital Research Award from the International Conference on Emergency Medicine (2014) and the Australian Prehospital Emergency Health Research Forum Best Paper Award (2014), recognizing his contributions to prehospital research.
As an educator who continues clinical practice, Dr. Simpson bridges theory and practice, ensuring his academic work remains relevant to real-world paramedic challenges.
