Paul Proost is a full professor at the Faculty of Medicine, KU Leuven, serving as Vice Dean for Student Affairs. He leads the Molecular Immunology unit at the Rega Institute, the Immunity and Inflammation Research Group, and the Division of Immunology at Rega. His extensive administrative roles include membership in the Faculty of Medicine Council, Board, and multiple Program and Organizing Committees (POCs) for medical disciplines.
His research centers on immunology with focus areas in inflammation, chemokine biology, allergy mechanisms, and leukocyte trafficking. He investigates posttranslational modifications of chemokines, proteoform functions in inflammatory diseases, and immune regulation in conditions like arthritis, pneumonia, and transplant rejection. His work bridges molecular mechanisms with clinical applications for inflammatory disorders.
Recent publications demonstrate consistent output in high-impact journals, emphasizing inflammation resolution pathways, chemokine proteoform detection, and immune cell dynamics in liver injury, viral encephalitis, and autoimmune diseases. Key themes include neutrophil/monocyte roles in fibrosis, proteolytic control of chemokine activity, and biomarker discovery for autoinflammatory conditions.
He actively supervises PhD candidates including S. Vandendriessche and secures substantial research funding as promotor/co-promotor for projects such as:
- Validation of IgE subform detection in clinical allergy (2025-2028)
- Biological effects of CCL2/CCL5 proteoforms in inflammation (2024-2028)
- Leukocyte trafficking in inflammation resolution (2023-2027)
- ACTIVE inflammation training network (2024-2027)
His laboratory within the Rega Institute drives translational research through the Immunity and Inflammation Research Group, with strong collaborations across KU Leuven's Institute for Rare Diseases (Leuven.IRD) and international consortia like ImmunAID.
