Dr Paul Potter is a Senior Lecturer and Group Leader in Disease Mechanisms and Ageing at the School of Biological and Medical Sciences, Oxford Brookes University. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Biology and a member of the Centre for Osteoarthritis Pathogenesis at the Kennedy Institute, Oxford. His work integrates genetics, ageing biology, and translational medicine to uncover the molecular underpinnings of chronic and age-related diseases.

Research Interests:
Dr Potter’s research focuses on the genetic basis of chronic and age-related diseases, with a particular emphasis on extracellular matrix (ECM) dysfunction, renal disease, osteoarthritis, and cardiomyopathy. He leads the Harwell Ageing Screen, a large-scale phenotype-driven mutagenesis program that identifies novel genes and pathways contributing to disease. His lab uses mouse models to study collagenopathies, mitochondrial disorders, and metabolic dysregulation, aiming to identify therapeutic targets for age-related pathologies.
Scientific Contributions & Trends:
Across more than 30 peer-reviewed publications since 2015, Dr Potter has consistently explored the intersection of genetics, ageing, and disease modelling. His work spans nephrology, cardiology, neuroscience, and musculoskeletal biology. A recurring theme is the use of ENU mutagenesis and CRISPR/Cas9 to generate novel mouse models that recapitulate human disease, followed by deep phenotyping and molecular profiling to uncover mechanistic insights.

He has secured funding from INFRAFRONTIER H2020, EU COST Actions, and other transnational access programs.

He leads the Disease Mechanisms and Ageing Group at Oxford Brookes and collaborates extensively with the Kennedy Institute, Imperial College London, and the MRC Harwell Institute. His work is supported by shared ageing research infrastructures like ShARM and EUMODIC.
