Professor Catherine Abbott is a faculty member at the University of Edinburgh, based at the Centre for Genomic and Experimental Medicine within the MRC Institute of Genetics and Molecular Medicine. She serves as Director of the IGMM Graduate School, overseeing a 4-year PhD program in genomic and experimental medicine.
Her academic qualifications include a Bachelor of Science in Pathobiology (2:1) from the University of Reading (1983) and a PhD in Biochemical Genetics from the MRC Mammalian Genetics Unit, Harwell (1987). Following postdoctoral research at University College London's Galton Laboratory, she held a lectureship at UCL before joining the University of Edinburgh in 1993.
Professor Abbott's research spans cancer biology and neuroscience, with focus on molecular mechanisms of neurodevelopmental disorders and breast cancer. Her work centers on translation elongation factors—particularly eEF1A2—using mouse models to investigate disease pathogenesis in intellectual disability, epilepsy, and oncogenesis. Her laboratory employs advanced genetic, molecular, and imaging techniques to dissect pathological pathways.
Analysis of her recent publications (2020-2025) reveals dominant themes: EEF1A2-related neurodevelopmental disorders (including mouse model development and genotype-phenotype studies), therapeutic interventions (AAV9 gene therapy), and cancer mechanisms (eEF1A2-PTEN-GSK3β-Aurora kinase A pathway in breast cancer). Her work bridges fundamental molecular biology with clinical translation.
As Director of the IGMM Graduate School, Professor Abbott leads postgraduate education and supervision for over 100 PhD students annually.
