Paul Oxley is an Associate Professor and Department Chair in the Physics Department at the College of the Holy Cross. His research focuses on experimental atomic physics, including ion-atom collision studies and laser spectroscopy of highly-excited atoms. He earned his Ph.D. from Harvard University and has led a laboratory where undergraduates collaborate on projects involving plasma physics, fusion research, and astrophysical applications.
Key research areas include charge transfer collisions in ion-atom systems, laser-based atomic beam density measurements, and magnetic material characterization. His experimental setups involve lithium ovens, ion sources, and advanced spectroscopic techniques. Recent work includes precise measurements of cross sections for collisions between ions and lithium atoms, contributing to both theoretical validation and practical applications in plasma science.
Professor Oxley has advised numerous undergraduate researchers, with projects ranging from trajectory simulations to detector design. His publications span journals like Physical Review A, Applied Physics B, and Review of Scientific Instruments. Beyond research, he teaches courses such as Introductory Physics and Modern Physics, emphasizing foundational concepts and advanced topics.
