Professor Paul Newton serves as a Professor of Social Science Applied to Health and Illness within the School of Health Sciences at the University of Greenwich, where he concurrently holds leadership roles as Programme Leader for the PhD in Health Sciences and Academic Portfolio Lead for Simulation and Research. With over 18 years of specialized experience in social and public health research, his work critically examines chronic condition management, lived experiences of health and illness, and systemic dynamics within healthcare workforces across diverse institutional contexts.
His academic foundation includes:
- MSc from the London School of Economics
- PhD in Sociology Applied to Healthcare from King's College London
Newton's research program centers on the sociological dimensions of chronic illness, interrogating how socioeconomic factors shape patient experiences and healthcare navigation. His investigations into workforce dynamics expose structural pressures affecting clinical professionals, while his public health contributions emphasize community-based intervention frameworks. This tripartite focus bridges theoretical sociology with tangible healthcare improvements through rigorous mixed-methods approaches.
As an educator, Newton delivers advanced instruction in public health policy, medical sociology, and qualitative/quantitative research methodologies. He actively supervises doctoral candidates exploring phenomenological aspects of illness, fostering next-generation scholars through intensive mentorship grounded in critical social theory and empirical rigor.
