Mallison's research centers on short film production exploring Welsh cultural identity, familial power structures, and emotional counterpoint. His creative works consistently examine themes of powerlessness, warmth, and societal friction through intimate narratives, often contextualized within Welsh settings and contemporary news frameworks. This focus manifests in psychologically nuanced storytelling that bridges academic theory and broadcast industry practice.
His 2013-2015 creative outputs demonstrate an evolving trajectory in short film performance, moving from explorations of familial conflict (Harder) to societal commentary on Welsh cultural dynamics (A Proper Little Family) and culminating in experimental cross-platform storytelling (Halfway). These works collectively establish his signature approach to emotional authenticity within constrained narrative formats.
As Course Leader, Mallison integrates his professional background as Director of Photography, editor, and festival-screened short film director into curriculum development. His industry experience spanning UK broadcast and international corporate productions directly informs the program's practical, real-world orientation within the Creative Industries Research and Innovation Group framework.
