Dr. Paul MacLennan is a Professor of Surgery and Associate Director of Transplant Analytics, Informatics & Quality at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). He holds joint appointments in the School of Medicine (Department of Surgery - Transplantation) and the School of Public Health (Epidemiology). His expertise includes epidemiology, transplant outcomes, health disparities, and HIV-related health issues. MacLennan is affiliated with the UAB Center for Clinical and Translational Science (CCTS), where he provides biostatistics and study design consultations.
Education:

Research Interests:
MacLennan's research focuses on transplantation outcomes, particularly in HIV-positive patients, health disparities in kidney transplantation, and optimizing living donor safety. He has pioneered studies on racial inequities in kidney recovery post-donation and developed risk tools for kidney donors with APOL1 variants. His work also addresses obesity-related risks in living donors and policy implications of revised eGFR formulas.
Grants:
MacLennan has led or co-led grants totaling over $10 million, including NIH-funded studies on HIV-to-HIV transplantation, APOL1 genetics in kidney disease, and living donor outcomes. Notable funders include the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) and the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS).
Teaching & Mentorship:
He has mentored over 20 students and trainees, including roles on dissertation committees for Nicole Pelletier, Thomas Alb Swain, and others. He teaches EPI600: Intro to Epidemiology at UAB.
Labs/Teams:
MacLennan collaborates with the UAB CCTS Biostatistics, Epidemiology, and Research Design group and the Transplant Outcomes Research Center. His work bridges clinical and public health domains to address systemic inequities in organ transplantation.
