Paul Lodge is a Professor of Philosophy at the University of Oxford and a Fellow and Tutor in Philosophy at Mansfield College. His academic specialization lies in Early Modern Philosophy, particularly the works of Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz. Lodge earned a Ph.D. in Philosophy from Rutgers University (1998), an M.A. (with Distinction) in Philosophy of Mind from Leeds University (1991), and a B.A. (1st Class) in Philosophy and Psychology from the University of Oxford (1990).
His research focuses on Leibniz’s metaphysics, theodicy, and philosophical correspondences. Key projects include editing Leibniz’s writings (e.g., G.W. Leibniz: Philosophical Publications) and analyzing his critiques of Cartesianism and occasionalism. Lodge’s scholarly contributions span Leibniz’s interactions with contemporaries like Arnauld and De Volder, as well as his engagement with Spinozist and Pyrrhonian themes.
Beyond academia, Lodge is a musician blending philosophical themes with folk and ambient music. He has composed cycles like Shakespeare in the Alley (inspired by Shakespeare’s plays) and Preludes to Wordsworth, performed at venues such as South Hill Park Arts Centre and the Banbury Canal Festival. His interdisciplinary work bridges philosophy, literature, and music, exemplified by albums like Preludes to Wordsworth, recorded at Rydal Mount, Wordsworth’s former home.
His musical projects, such as Cantat Ergo Sumus (philosophical poems set to music) and ambient instrumentals, reflect a lifelong engagement with philosophical ideas through artistic expression. Lodge’s teaching and research roles at Mansfield College further underscore his dual commitment to academic rigor and creative exploration.
