Paul Jolicoeur is a Full Professor-Researcher at the Université de Montréal, holding dual affiliations with the Faculty of Medicine and the Institut de Recherches Cliniques de Montréal (IRCM). His research focuses on retroviral pathogenesis, oncogene activation, and HIV-induced immunodeficiency using transgenic mouse models. He has led major studies on the Nef protein's role in HIV virulence and developed innovative animal models for AIDS research.
Awarded the prestigious Prix Léo-Pariseau (1992) and induction into the Royal Society of Canada (1989), his career has been marked by over 40 years of groundbreaking contributions to virology and oncology. As a mentor, he has supervised 27 PhD students, 25 MSc students, and 53 postdoctoral researchers, many of whom pursue prominent scientific careers.
Key research areas include retrovirus-host interactions, oncogene activation mechanisms in leukemia and breast cancer, and molecular pathways of HIV-associated nephropathy (HIVAN). He currently leads projects funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, NIH, and Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR).
