Paul Janmey is a Professor of Physics and Astronomy and Adjunct Professor of Physiology at the University of Pennsylvania. His research focuses on cell mechanics, soft materials, and cytoskeletal dynamics. He holds affiliations with the Institute for Medicine and Engineering, Cell and Molecular Biology Graduate Group, and the Pennsylvania Muscle Institute. With a Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin (1982) and an A.B. from Oberlin College (1976), his work explores how cells sense and respond to mechanical cues through substrate stiffness, cytoskeletal networks, and membrane signaling. Recent studies emphasize vimentin's role in mechanosensing, extracellular matrix mechanics, and nuclear stiffness regulation.
Research interests include the interplay between cell mechanics and biological processes like inflammation, cancer progression, and tissue regeneration. His lab develops hydrogel materials to study cell-material interactions, with applications in biomaterials and regenerative medicine. Over 200 peer-reviewed articles highlight his contributions to mechanobiology, cytoskeleton biology, and biomedical engineering.
