Paul James is Professor of Globalization and Cultural Diversity at the Institute for Culture and Society, Western Sydney University. He holds a PhD from the University of Melbourne and has authored or edited over 30 books. His work focuses on globalization, ontological formations, social change, and community studies. He has advised international agencies like the Berlin Senate Chancellery and directed the UN’s Global Compact Cities Programme (2007–2014).
Research Interests: James’ research explores how globalization intersects with cultural diversity, ontological shifts, and societal security. He critiques modernist frameworks and emphasizes engaged theory addressing contemporary crises. His recent work examines algorithmic decision-making in social work, disjunctive globalization, and the Anthropocene’s material impacts.
Projects & Grants: He leads major projects including the ARC-funded 'Extinction Imaginaries: Mapping Affective Visual Cultures in Australasia' (2023–2025) and 'Enabling Disability: Autonomous Technologies & CaLD persons with disability' (2020–2025). Past projects include urban sustainability collaborations with Berlin and waste management initiatives in Canterbury-Bankstown.
Labs/Teams: His work spans interdisciplinary teams across cultural infrastructure, disability advocacy, and global urban policy. Notable outputs include the 'Principles for Better Cities' framework and research on Antarctic gateway cities.
