Dr. Paul J Pfaffinger serves as the Wilhelmina Robertson Distinguished Chair in Neuroscience and Professor and Chair of the Department of Neuroscience at Baylor College of Medicine. He leads an active research laboratory focused on understanding ion channel regulation and its role in nervous system function, with particular emphasis on potassium channels and their auxiliary subunits.
Dr. Pfaffinger received his B.S. from Loyola Marymount University (1981), Ph.D. from University of Washington (1987), and completed advanced training at Columbia University (1990). His educational background established the foundation for his career in molecular neuroscience.
Dr. Pfaffinger's research program centers on ion channel regulation, specifically investigating how potassium channels assemble, function, and are regulated in native neurons. His laboratory has made significant contributions to understanding the N-terminal T1 domain's role in potassium channel assembly, leading to the development of innovative optogenetic tools called Opto-Kv channels that allow light-dependent regulation of channel expression. Current work focuses on how auxiliary subunit proteins regulate potassium channel function, the mechanisms of channel inactivation, and developing computational approaches using modern neural network programming toolboxes like PyTorch and TensorFlow to model ion channel behavior in neural systems.
