Paul Hooper

Professor Paul Hooper is the Research Lead for the Department of Natural Sciences and Head of Enterprise Development within the Faculty of Science and Engineering at Manchester Metropolitan University (Manchester Met). He holds the Chair in Environmental Management and Sustainability, specializing in mitigating aviation's climate and noise impacts. His career spans roles including Lecturer at Keele University (1992–1994), Senior Lecturer at Manchester Met (1994–2009), and Regional Director for the National HE STEM Programme (2009–2012). He became Professor of Environmental Management & Sustainability in 2013.

Key research interests include corporate responsibility, sustainable development, waste management, carbon accounting, and noise communication. He leads projects like the €7.4M EU-funded ANIMA initiative and a UK Civil Aviation Authority-funded study on airspace modernization. He chairs Greater Manchester’s Sustainable Consumption and Production Challenge Group and advises Manchester City Council’s Zero Carbon Advisory Group.

Teaching contributions include modules on organizational sustainability and environmental impact assessment for undergraduate programs in Environmental Science and Human Geography. His PhD supervision has produced graduates focusing on aviation retail, higher education carbon reduction, waste optimization, sport partnerships, and noise communication strategies.

Grants and projects highlight significant industry collaboration, including work with airports to enhance environmental management practices. His research contributed to 'outstanding impact' recognition in the UK’s Research Excellence Framework (REF2021).
