Dr. Paul Hayne serves as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Astrophysical and Planetary Sciences at the University of Colorado Boulder, with his research group based at the Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics (LASP). He holds dual critical roles in NASA's Lunar-VISE mission as both the Thermophysical Properties Investigation Lead and LV-CIRiS Instrument Manager/Scientist, while also contributing as a Co-Investigator.
His research centers on planetary thermophysics, specializing in the thermal behavior and physical characteristics of airless bodies like the Moon. Through Lunar-VISE, he investigates lunar vent geology using infrared spectroscopy to analyze surface composition, regolith properties, and heat transfer mechanisms. This work bridges astrophysical modeling with practical space instrumentation development, advancing our understanding of planetary evolution and supporting future lunar exploration initiatives.
LASP provides the operational backbone for his research, leading mission operations and data systems for Lunar-VISE. The laboratory's interdisciplinary environment enables integration of instrument design, spacecraft operations, and data analysis for space science missions, positioning Dr. Hayne at the forefront of lunar surface studies.
