Professor Paul Gribben is a marine ecologist at the University of New South Wales (UNSW Sydney) within the School of Biological, Earth & Environmental Sciences. He directs the Sydney Harbour Research Program at the Sydney Institute of Marine Science, focusing on natural solutions to environmental issues through interdisciplinary collaboration.
- Research Themes: Ecology of marine foundation species, invasion biology, plant-soil feedbacks, facilitation cascades, biodiversity processes, and environmental stress impacts.
- Teaching: Coordinates MSCI2001 Introduction to Marine Science; lectures in invertebrate zoology, marine ecology, and field biology.
- Students: Supervises active PhD, Hons, and MSc students across local and international institutions.
His work integrates experimental ecology with large-scale restoration projects, emphasizing microbial interactions in seagrass and oyster reef systems. Current research explores bioturbator roles in contaminated sediment remediation and biodiversity enhancement through habitat heterogeneity.
Recent publications highlight microbial mediation in seagrass climate resilience, spatial dynamics of oyster reef restoration, and trait-based approaches to invasive species control. Collaborative projects span Australia, Italy, Spain, and the U.S., focusing on temperate marine ecosystems.
