Dr. Paul Brooks is an Assistant Professor in the School of Biology and Environmental Science at University College Dublin. His research focuses on marine ecology, particularly human impacts on coastal systems, eco-engineering solutions for artificial structures, and the effects of multiple stressors on biodiversity. He holds a BSc and PhD from UCD, along with certifications in university teaching and learning.
Key research interests include the ecological impacts of coastal urbanization, invasive species, and the application of eco-engineering to enhance biodiversity on artificial marine infrastructure. Current projects involve the Ecostructure Project, World Harbours Project, and collaborations with networks like ABC2 and GLOW. He oversees grants such as the EPA-funded project on seagrass and oyster reef restoration.
Teaching spans modules like Biogeography, Marine Community Ecology, and Invertebrate Diversity. He has supervised over 28 undergraduate and graduate students on topics ranging from multiple stressors to materials science in eco-engineering. His work emphasizes mentoring and fostering student-led learning, including a teaching award nomination in 2017/18 and 2019/20.
Collaborations include global initiatives like the World Harbours Project, focusing on port environmental risks. His research highlights the importance of structural complexity in artificial habitats and the need for context-specific eco-engineering solutions to address biodiversity loss in coastal areas.
