Professor Paul Giles holds an Honorary Professorship in the Discipline of English and Writing at the University of Sydney's Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. He earned his BA and DPhil from the University of Oxford and has held roles including Director of the Rothermere American Institute at Oxford (2003-2008) and President of the International American Studies Association (2005-2007). His research focuses on American literature, transnationalism, and global literary studies, with notable works like Antipodean America and Backgazing: Reverse Time in Modernist Culture. Giles has contributed to over 60 publications, including books on transnationalism and world literature.
His current projects explore antipodean temporality and global English. He serves on editorial boards for journals like American Literary History and Journal of American Studies. Grants include the ARC-funded 'Chronometrics: Cross-Temporal Approaches to Literature and Culture' (2014) and collaborations on climate change and environmental humanities. Media engagements include discussions on AI's cultural impact and Cormac McCarthy's literary legacy.
