Paul Gibbard is a Senior Lecturer in the Discipline of European Languages and Cultures at the University of Western Australia. He holds a BA from Adelaide, MPhil and DPhil from Oxford. His research focuses on French literature from the 18th to 20th centuries, with specialization in Voltaire, Rousseau, Enlightenment women's writing, and French exploration of Australia (1800–1820). Notable projects include translating Émile Zola's 'The Dream' and researching botanist Théodore Leschenault's 1800–1804 Baudin expedition.
Teaching includes French Studies courses (FREN1401–FREN2404), French Cinema, and Honours coordination. He has contributed to ARC-funded projects like the Baudin Legacy and the History of Emotions Centre. Awards include a translation medal shortlisting and exhibition recognition. Current projects involve Colette translations and Leschenault's biography.
