He was a former President of the American Chemical Society (ACS) and a member of the National Academy of Sciences. His research focused on organic reaction mechanisms, catalysis, and related areas, yielding over 300 publications, 32 patents, and training for 72 Ph.D. and 13 M.S. students.
Education: B.S. in Chemistry from Canisius College (1957), Ph.D. from Cornell University (1960). Postdoctoral work at Cornell preceded roles at Ohio State University (Assistant Professor) and the University of Minnesota (Professor from 1974).
He played pivotal roles in ACS leadership, including Chair of the Division of Organic Chemistry (DOC) and service on the ACS Executive Committee. The Gassman Memorial Seminar Series and the Paul G.
