Paul Fernie is a Clinical Research Fellow and PhD Student at Anglia Ruskin University (ARU), affiliated with the Cambridge Institute for Music Therapy Research. He holds roles within the Faculty of Arts, Humanities, Education and Social Sciences and the Cambridge School of Creative Industries. His research focuses on integrating music production technology into music therapy to enhance well-being, particularly for youth and persons with dementia. He is supervised by Prof Jörg Fachner, Dr Clemens Maidhof, and Dr William Campbell.
Paul’s educational background includes a BA in Music Production and Sound Engineering and an MA in Music Therapy. His work explores the therapeutic impact of music technology tools, tempo modulation in reducing agitation, and music’s role in later life. He collaborates with institutions like the University of Augsburg and Cambridge University to develop music therapy education and smart technology applications.
His teaching includes the MA Music Therapy program, specifically the 'Principles of Music Therapy' course. He is a HCPC Registered Music Therapist and member of the British Association of Music Therapists. Recent research collaborations include developing music therapy tools for smart devices and presenting at global conferences on topics like iPad use in substance misuse therapy.
