Paul Ellison serves as Visiting Professor of Double Bass at the Royal College of Music (RCM), holding concurrent positions as Lynette S. Autrey Professor of Double Bass and Chair of Strings at Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music, Visiting Artist-Faculty at the University of Southern California, and guest tutor at the Yehudi Menuhin School and Bass Club, England. His global engagement spans four continents through solo and ensemble performances, masterclasses, and summer faculty roles at the Grand Teton Music Festival (Principal Bass), Sarasota Music Festival, and Festival Domaine Forget, Quebec.
Ellison’s research interests center on double bass performance techniques, historical period instruments, and advanced orchestral training methodologies. His pedagogical innovations have shaped bass education worldwide, notably through his certification from Institut International Rabbath in Paris—where he was the first to earn both diploma and teaching credentials. His work bridges classical performance practice with contemporary educational frameworks.
As an educator, Ellison has mentored students who now hold titled positions in major ensembles and academic institutions across five continents. His leadership extends to former roles as President of the International Society of Bassists and Principal Bass for the Houston Symphony, Houston Grand Opera, and Santa Fe Opera. Summer engagements consistently feature him as both performer and pedagogue at premier festivals.
Ellison maintains active performance laboratories through his festival appointments, particularly at Grand Teton Music Festival where he combines principal bass duties with instructional leadership. His collaborative networks include residencies at Domaine Forget and Sarasota Music Festival, fostering transnational exchange among emerging bassists.
