Professor Paul E. Dux is a distinguished psychologist and neuroscientist serving as Professor and Deputy Head of School (Research) in the School of Psychology at The University of Queensland. He received his PhD from Macquarie University and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Vanderbilt University before joining UQ's faculty in 2009. His research focuses on the cognitive and neural underpinnings of human information-processing capacity limitations in both health and disease.
Professor Dux leads a research group that employs cutting-edge techniques including transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), and advanced cognitive testing methodologies. His work spans multiple research centers including the Centre for Perception and Cognitive Neuroscience. His primary research interests encompass attention mechanisms, executive function, cognitive training, brain stimulation techniques, and the neural basis of multitasking limitations.
Professor Dux has published extensively with over 138 journal articles, 2 book chapters, and numerous other publications to his name. His recent work has focused on neurochemical predictors of cognitive performance, mind wandering mechanisms, and the application of brain stimulation techniques for cognitive enhancement across diverse populations including children with brain injuries and adolescents.
He has successfully attracted significant research funding from major Australian research councils including the Australian Research Council (ARC) and National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC). His current projects include 'Using real-time neurofeedback to enhance human sustained attention' (2025-2027) and 'Neurochemical predictors of cognition and the impact of brain stimulation' (2023-2026), demonstrating continued relevance and productivity in his field.
Professor Dux actively supervises numerous PhD students both as principal advisor and associate advisor, with recent completions including dissertations on mind wandering, cognitive performance after brain injury, and brain stimulation applications. His supervision extends across multiple projects investigating the neural substrates of cognition, metacognition, and cognitive enhancement techniques, reflecting the breadth and depth of his research program.
His laboratory work frequently involves collaborations with researchers including Dr. Hannah Filmer, Dr. Timothy Ballard, and Professor Jason Mattingley, forming a robust research network focused on cognitive neuroscience and neurostimulation techniques. This collaborative approach has enabled him to conduct multimodal research that bridges behavioral, neural, and neurochemical levels of analysis.
