Professor Paul Crowther is a Professor of Astrophysics at the University of Sheffield's School of Mathematical and Physical Sciences. His research focuses on the life cycles of massive stars, particularly Wolf-Rayet stars, and their roles in galactic evolution. He has contributed over 190 publications, including landmark studies in Annual Review of Astronomy & Astrophysics. His work combines observational data from telescopes like VLT and HST with advanced computational models. Key achievements include revising stellar mass limits, discovering the Milky Way's first super star cluster (Westerlund 1), and studying metallicity effects on stellar winds. He leads projects like T-ReX (Chandra X-ray study of the Tarantula Nebula) and ULLYSES-XshootU (UV/optical spectroscopy of low-metallicity OB stars).
Education: BSc in Maths & Astronomy (UCL, 1986-1989), PhD in Astrophysics (UCL, 1989-1993).
Research Interests: Massive star evolution, Wolf-Rayet stars, stellar feedback mechanisms, binary systems, and galactic ecology. His work bridges observational astronomy with theoretical models to understand stellar lifecycles and impacts on galaxies.
Grants: Includes STFC grants (e.g., £1.3M Consolidated Grant, 2021-2024) and leadership roles in international initiatives like ULLYSES and BLOeM.
Advising: Currently supervises PhD student Thaer Alkousa and collaborates with postdocs like Joachim Bestenlehner. Mentors MPhys students on projects like the Wolf-Rayet database.
Labs/Teams: Leads the Astrophysics Research Cluster at Sheffield, focusing on projects like Tarantula-X (X-ray studies) and BlueMUSE (MUSE spectroscopic surveys). Collaborates internationally on missions like CASTOR and CETUS.
