Paul Crawshaw is a Professor in Public Policy at Teesside University, affiliated with the Department of Law, Policing and Investigation within the School of Social Sciences, Humanities and Law (SSHL). He previously served as Dean of SSHL, transforming it into a research-driven institution emphasizing community engagement and professional education. His research focuses on governance, health inequalities, public health policy, and the interplay between economic inactivity and health. Current work, funded by NIHR, examines economic inactivity's health impacts. He has led evaluations of community initiatives like Tees Health Action Zone and Sure Start programs.
As former Chair of Healthwatch South Tees and member of the North East Child Poverty Commission, Crawshaw bridges academic and community sectors. He co-directs the University Alliance's Doctoral Training Alliance. His career began in youth work, evolving through academic leadership roles. Key areas include critical public health perspectives, social marketing, and complex intervention evaluations. He advocates participatory research methods and has edited the journal Critical Public Health.
