Paul Bowman is a Professor of Cultural Studies and Deputy Head of School at Cardiff University's School of Journalism, Media and Culture. He serves as Chair of the Research Ethics Committee and previously directed the MA in Cultural and Creative Industries from 2021-2024. Bowman teaches BA modules in 'Film, Media and Cultural Theory' and 'East Meets West in Film and Popular Culture', and supervises PhD students across multiple disciplines. He is Director of the Media, Culture and Creativity Research Group and founder of the Martial Arts Studies Association.
Academically, Bowman earned his BA (Hons) in English, MA in Cultural Studies, and PhD in cultural and political theory from Leeds University. His doctoral work focused on the theoretical underpinnings of cultural studies, which later became his first monograph "Post-Marxism versus Cultural Studies" (2007).
Professor Bowman's research spans cultural theory, media studies, and the interdisciplinary field of martial arts studies, which he has significantly helped develop over the past decade. His work examines the intersections of culture and politics, with particular focus on East-West cultural encounters, post-colonial studies, and embodied practices. He has pioneered research in areas including:
- The cultural history and representation of martial arts
- Embodiment and physical culture studies
- Orientalism in media and popular culture
- Cross-cultural communication between Asia and the West
- The relationship between health, wellbeing, and conspiracy theories
His recent publications demonstrate a continued evolution from martial arts studies into broader cultural phenomena, with increasing attention to practices like taijiquan, qigong, yoga, and meditation. Bowman's scholarly approach combines cultural theory with empirical research on embodied practices, revealing how these disciplines function as sites of cultural negotiation and ideological formation.
Among his notable achievements are the AHRC Research Network Funding for the Martial Arts Studies Research Network (2015), an Honorary Black Belt from the World Taekkyeon Headquarters in Seoul (2015), and being presented with a Tewhatewha (General's Staff) by the Head of the Maori King's Guard (2016). He has held visiting positions at Waikato University (Adjunct Professor, 2013) and Ljubljana University (Visiting Professor, 2014).
As a dedicated educator and mentor, Bowman has supervised numerous PhD students whose research spans cultural theory, martial arts, media studies, and cross-cultural encounters. He is deeply committed to open-access scholarship, having founded Cardiff University Press and two open-access journals. His Martial Arts Studies Podcast, launched during the 2020 pandemic, has become a significant platform for disseminating research in this field.
Through the Martial Arts Studies Research Network (established 2015) and the Martial Arts Studies Association (established 2023), Bowman has built international scholarly communities focused on interdisciplinary research. His Media, Culture and Creativity Research Group at Cardiff University serves as a hub for innovative work at the intersection of media, culture, and creative practice.
