Paul Boon

Paul Boon is a Full Professor (Part-time) at Eindhoven University of Technology, affiliated with the Department of Electrical Engineering. He maintains extensive connections with multiple research entities including the Center for Care & Cure Technology Eindhoven, Electromagnetics for Care + Cure Research Lab (EM4Care+Cure), Eindhoven MedTech Innovation Center, NeuroPlatform, and the Electromagnetics group.

His research centers on neuromodulation techniques, particularly transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), examining their mechanisms of action and clinical applications. Boon investigates how these approaches modulate corticospinal excitability and potentially treat neurological conditions, with special focus on epilepsy and SUDEP (Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy). His work bridges engineering principles with clinical neuroscience to develop novel therapeutic approaches.

Boon's recent publications demonstrate a strong emphasis on understanding the fundamental mechanisms of neuromodulation techniques and their effects on neural pathways. His research also addresses critical clinical issues such as SUDEP risk assessment and brain health more broadly. He has received funding from multiple sources including the FWO (Scientific Research Fund) Flanders, BOF-UGent, Ghent University Hospital, and E-Epilepsy (European Union). One notable project, "PerStim," was cofunded by the Dutch PPP Allowance through Health Holland. Boon also participates in the European Academy of Neurology, contributing to its development as "the home of neurology" in Europe.

Professor Boon leads research within the Electromagnetics for Care + Cure Research Lab (EM4Care+Cure), which focuses on applying electromagnetic technologies to medical challenges, particularly in neurology and epilepsy treatment. His team works at the intersection of engineering and clinical neuroscience to develop innovative diagnostic and therapeutic approaches with translational potential.
