Paul Beales

Professor Paul Beales serves as Professor of Soft Matter and Biophysics at the School of Chemistry within the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences at the University of Leeds. He joined the institution in 2010 as a Senior Research Fellow, progressing to Lecturer (2015), Associate Professor (2016), and full Professor (2022), while currently holding the role of Research Section Head for Functional Materials and Molecular Assemblies.

His academic journey commenced with a PhD from the University of Edinburgh (2005), followed by postdoctoral appointments at Princeton University (2005-2008) and Yale University (2008-2010), establishing his foundation in interdisciplinary physical sciences.

Professor Beales leads cutting-edge research at the physics-chemistry-biology interface, specializing in soft and biological materials engineering with emphasis on biomolecular self-assembly and membrane biophysics. His work pioneers vesicle-based technologies for nanomedicine, artificial cells, and controlled drug delivery systems, leveraging bottom-up synthetic biology approaches to reconstitute cellular functions in minimal systems.

As an educator, he contributes significantly to the Physical Chemistry teaching section and Natural Sciences programme, delivering lectures on soft matter, thermodynamics, and biological membranes while actively recruiting PhD candidates for projects like 'Engineering dynamic, functional membrane interfaces for artificial cells'.

The Beales Research Group operates within the Chemical Biology and Medicinal Chemistry and Crystallisation and Directed Assembly institutes, focusing on transformative applications in nanomedicine and smart material design through interdisciplinary collaboration.
