Paul Babitzke is the Stanley R. Person Professor of Molecular Biology at Penn State University's Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. He holds a B.A. in Biomedical Science from St. Cloud State University and a Ph.D. in Genetics from the University of Georgia, followed by postdoctoral research at Stanford University. His research focuses on RNA-mediated gene regulation, including mechanisms of transcription elongation, termination, and translational control by RNA-binding proteins like CsrA. He directs the Center for RNA Molecular Biology.
Research Interests: Regulation of gene expression via RNA structure and RNA-binding proteins. Key areas include RNA polymerase pausing, CsrA global regulatory networks in bacteria, and transcription termination mechanisms in Bacillus subtilis and E. coli. His lab uses genomic approaches (e.g., RNET-seq, Term-seq) and biochemical tools to study these processes. Recent work highlights NusG's role in pausing and CsrA's dual role in translational repression/activation.
Awards: Notable recognitions include AAAS and AAM Fellowships, the Charles E. Kaufman Research Award (2016), and the St. Cloud State Distinguished Alumni Award (2018).
Labs & Collaborations: Leads the Babitzke Lab at Penn State, part of the Center for RNA Molecular Biology. Active in grant review committees (e.g., NIGMS Microbial Physiology) and professional societies (ASM).
