معرفی
Paul B. Yoo is an Associate Professor in the Institute of Biomedical Engineering and the Edward S. Rogers Sr. Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering at the University of Toronto, with a license as a Professional Engineer (PEng). His research focuses on Neural Engineering, aiming to develop clinically effective therapies through electrical neuromodulation.
- Education: Graduated from the Engineering Science program (Biomedical Engineering option) at the University of Toronto (BASc, 1995), earned an MS (1998) and PhD (2004) in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Southern California and Case Western Reserve University, respectively.
- Appointments: Also serves as Associate Director of Professional Programs and holds cross-appointments at the Toronto Rehabilitation Institute.
Research Areas: Investigates neural reflexes for bladder function restoration in spinal cord injury, non-invasive nerve stimulation techniques, and proprietary waveforms for peripheral nerve modulation. Clinical applications include therapies for urinary dysfunction, obstructive sleep apnea, and vagus nerve stimulation for epilepsy.
Scientific Awards & Memberships:
- Member of the Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society (EMBS/IEEE), Society for Neuroscience, Biomedical Engineering Society (BMES), and the Canadian Neuromodulation Society.
- Awards: Student Travel Award (2003), Paper Competition Finalist (2002), Case Prime Fellowship Award (1999).
Advising & Collaborations: Trained graduate and post-doctoral students, including PhD candidates like Zainab Moazzam and Parisa Sabetian, and MASc students like Grant Gruenspan and Ali Howidi. Collaborated with researchers such as Dr. Sasha John (Baycrest’s Rotman Research Institute) and clinician-scientists like Dr. Magdy Hassouna (Toronto Western Hospital) to translate findings into clinical trials.
