Paul Armsworth is a Professor in the Department of Ecology & Evolutionary Biology at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, affiliated with the College of Arts and Sciences. His research integrates ecology and socioeconomic sciences to address conservation challenges, employing mathematical modeling, GIS, and interdisciplinary collaboration with NGOs and government agencies. He holds a Ph.D. in Biological Sciences from Stanford University (2003) and a Ph.D. in Mathematics from James Cook University (2000).
Research interests focus on biodiversity conservation, spatial conservation planning, and the economic dimensions of natural resource management. His lab explores how to optimize funding allocation, protected area design, and adaptive policies under climate change. Recent work examines land protection strategies, donor behavior, and socio-ecological system governance.
Publications highlight themes like spatial exchange rates for conservation funding, federal policy flexibility, and stakeholder preferences in valuing future biodiversity. His work has been published in high-impact journals such as Frontiers in Ecology and the Environment and Conservation Biology.
Armsworth collaborates with institutions globally to translate science into actionable conservation strategies. His lab’s website (armsworthlab.com) provides further details on ongoing projects and interdisciplinary approaches.
