Paul Andrew Hutton is a Distinguished Professor Emeritus of History at the University of New Mexico, specializing in U.S., military, and frontier history. He joined the faculty in 1984 and has taught courses on American West, military history, and film studies. His research focuses on the intersection of history and popular culture, including Western films and documentaries.
Education: B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. in History from Indiana University (1972–1981). He has authored or edited over 20 books, including Phil Sheridan and His Army and The Custer Reader, and contributed to numerous scholarly and popular articles. His media work includes over 200 documentaries for networks like PBS, History Channel, and Discovery, as well as historical consulting for films like The Missing and Jane Got a Gun.
Awarded the Ray Allen Billington Prize, multiple Spur and Western Heritage Awards, and the Chambers Endowed Award for Excellence in History. Served as Executive Director of the Western History Association (1991–2006) and President of the Western Writers of America (2002–2004). His teaching includes graduate seminars on Western historiography and biographies, and courses like Western Hero and War on Film.
Recognized for bridging academic and public history through media, lectures, and publications. His work emphasizes the cultural and mythological dimensions of Western history, influencing both scholarly and general audiences.
