Dr Paul Anderson is the Prince Alwaleed Associate Professor in Middle Eastern Studies at the University of Cambridge, Assistant Director of the Prince Alwaleed Centre of Islamic Studies, and a Fellow of Darwin College. As a social anthropologist, he explores the articulation of economic, moral, and political life through ethnographic fieldwork in Syria, China, Turkey, and the UAE.
- Research Interests: Commerce, moral economy, urban Muslim societies, transnational networks, and the anthropology of Islam.
- Teaching: Lectures and supervises MPhil students in anthropology of the Middle East and anthropology of Islam.
- Supervision: Available for PhD projects on anthropology of Islam, ethics, commerce, or Syria. On sabbatical 2025/6.
His recent work includes the book Exchange Ideologies (2023), analyzing Aleppo’s pre-conflict trade morality, and projects like A New Silk Road? (ERC-funded) and The Afterlives of Urban Muslim Asia (collaborative with Sussex and Copenhagen). His articles focus on Syrian trade networks, urban imaginaries, and geopolitical dynamics in inter-Asian commerce.
