Jonathan A. C. Brown is a Professor and Chair of the Department of Arabic and Islamic Studies at Georgetown University, holding the Prince Alwaleed bin Talal Chair of Islamic Civilization. He earned his BA from Georgetown University (2000) and a Ph.D. in Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations from the University of Chicago (2006). His research focuses on Hadith studies, Islamic law, Salafism, Sufism, and ethical debates in Islamic tradition. He has conducted fieldwork across the Islamic world, including Egypt, Syria, Turkey, Morocco, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, South Africa, India, Indonesia, and Iran.
Key publications include *The Canonization of al-Bukhari and Muslim* (2007), *Hadith: Muhammad's Legacy* (2009/2017), *Misquoting Muhammad* (2014), *Slavery and Islam* (2019), and *Islam & Blackness* (2022). He is Editor-in-Chief of the *Oxford Encyclopedia of Islam and Law*. Current projects include Islamic legal reform and translating *Sahih al-Bukhari*.
His work bridges traditional scholarship and modern critical approaches, addressing issues like slavery, religious authority, and interfaith dialogue. Awards include selection for the National Endowment for the Humanities' Muslim Journeys Bookshelf (2011) and recognition by *The Independent* (2014).
