Paul Albert is a Full Professor at the Department of Medicine, University of Ottawa, with cross-appointments in the Faculty of Medicine as Professor of Cellular and Molecular Medicine, Center for Neural Dynamics, and Brain and Mind Research Institute. His research focuses on molecular mechanisms in anxiety and depression, particularly post-stroke depression, and therapeutic responses to antidepressants.
- Education:
- Ph.D. in Pharmacology, Harvard University (1985)
- B.Sc. (Honours) in Physiology and Biochemistry, McGill University (1980)
- D.E.C. in Biology, Marianopolis College (1977)
Research Interests center on serotonin (5-HT) and dopamine gene regulation, functional polymorphisms, and DNA methylation in mental illnesses like depression and schizophrenia. His lab uses human and mouse models to study post-stroke depression (PSD) and develops novel mouse models for antidepressant testing. He employs optogenetics and molecular cloning to dissect neural circuits and transcriptional mechanisms.
Publications (2023-2024) highlight his work on serotonin signaling, antidepressant resistance, and epigenetic regulation. Keywords include Neuroscience, Pharmacology, Molecular Biology, with subfields spanning Neurotransmitter Systems, Epigenetics, Neural Plasticity, and Animal Models.
Appointments include Senior Scientist at the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute (since 2001), Adjunct Scientist at Royal Ottawa Hospital (since 2015), and leadership roles in the Canadian Psychiatric Research Society (CPSR).
