Dr. Paul A. Nakata is an Associate Professor in Pediatrics-Nutrition at Baylor College of Medicine and a Research Molecular Biologist at the USDA-ARS Children's Nutrition Research Center in Houston, Texas. His research focuses on understanding oxalate biosynthesis, catabolism, and biomineralization in plants, aiming to improve nutritional quality and crop resilience.
Education: BA in Chemistry (Biochemistry concentration, San Jose State University), MS and PhD in Biochemistry and Biophysics (Washington State University). Awards include USDA Merit Award and recognition for top citation impact.
Research interests include calcium oxalate crystal formation mechanisms, oxalate's role in plant defense and human health, and redox regulation in plant stress responses. His lab employs genetic, genomic, and biochemical approaches to study pathways critical for crop improvement.
