Patty Graham-Thiers is a Professor and Department Head in the Department of Equine Studies at Emory & Henry College. She has over 20 years of experience in college-level teaching and research, with a focus on equine nutrition and exercise physiology. She has developed core courses such as Conformation & Selection and Equine Exercise Physiology, and leads an undergraduate research program that supports honors projects and departmental internships.
Education:
- Ph.D. in Equine Nutrition and Exercise Physiology, Virginia Polytechnic Institute, Blacksburg, VA
- M.S. in Equine Nutrition, University of Florida, Gainesville, FL
- B.S. in Animal Science, University of Massachusetts, Amherst, MA
Her research centers on optimizing dietary protein and amino acid intake for exercising and aging horses. She has published in peer-reviewed journals and presented at national and international conferences. Her work includes studies on amino acid metabolism, nitrogen balance, pasture turnout effects on fitness, and muscle mass improvement through supplementation.
Her recent publications reflect a strong emphasis on equine metabolic health, nutrient utilization, and performance optimization. The research bridges applied animal nutrition with physiological outcomes, particularly in athletic and geriatric horses.
Scientific Awards:
- Finalist, Outstanding Faculty Award (2012), State Council of Higher Education for Virginia
Dr. Graham-Thiers actively mentors undergraduate researchers and oversees the department’s internship program. She has been involved in significant professional service, including contributing to the National Academy of Sciences' Nutrient Requirements of Horses (6th edition, 2007). She is a member of the Equine Science Society (serving on the Nutrition Committee) and the American Society of Animal Scientists. While no external grants are explicitly mentioned, her leadership in curriculum development, research, and national advisory roles indicates a sustained record of scholarly engagement.
