Professor Patrick Zuk is a leading scholar in Russian and Soviet music and European cultural history at Durham University's School of Modern Languages and Cultures. He holds dual roles as Professor of Russian Cultural Studies and Music, and as Co-Director (Arts and Humanities) at the Institute of Advanced Study. His research focuses on Soviet composers like Nikolay Myaskovsky and Prokofiev, exploring intersections between trauma, modernism, and political context. Zuk has been awarded prestigious honors including the CHOICE Outstanding Academic Title (2022) and a Leverhulme Research Fellowship for his work on composers in the European imagination. His interdisciplinary projects include 'Understanding Offence: (De)limiting the Unsayable' (2024) and a monograph on trauma's influence on musical modernism.
Research Interests: Zuk's expertise spans Russian/Soviet music history, modernist aesthetics, trauma studies, and censorship's impact on art. His work bridges cultural history with close musical analysis, often uncovering suppressed narratives in Soviet artistic life. He actively mentors postgraduate students researching Eastern European cultural dynamics, modernism, and music's role in trauma.
