Patrick Unwin

Professor Patrick Unwin is a leading figure in electrochemistry at the University of Warwick, where he serves as both Professor and Head of the Department of Chemistry. He is Director of the Warwick Centre for Experimental Fuel Technologies and co-leads the internationally renowned Warwick Electrochemistry & Interfaces Group (WEIG), which he founded in 1991. Elected Fellow of the Royal Society in 2024, his work has significantly advanced the field of electrochemical imaging and instrumentation.

Unwin's research focuses on developing groundbreaking instrumental techniques for studying electrochemical and interfacial processes. His inventions have enabled scientists worldwide to examine complex electrodes with unprecedented detail, leading to commercial instruments based on his work. His research spans electrocatalysis, energy research, sensor systems, material characterisation, and life sciences applications, with particular expertise in boron-doped diamond materials and electrochemical imaging technologies.

Among his numerous accolades are multiple Royal Society of Chemistry medals (Marlow, Corday-Morgan, Barker, and Tilden), the American Chemical Society Electrochemistry Award, and the Society of Electroanalytical Chemistry's Charles N. Reilley Award. He has secured prestigious funding including an ERC Advanced Investigator grant and Royal Society Wolfson Merit Award.

Beyond his scientific work, he is an active musician performing with his band 'paparoro'.
